Garage door springs
in Pittsburgh.

Springs counterbalance the weight of a garage door. A broken or worn spring can leave the door too heavy to move safely, even when the opener still runs.

Sound familiar?

  • A visible gap in a torsion spring
  • A loud bang followed by a door that will not lift
  • A door that suddenly feels much heavier
  • An opener that strains or stops during travel

Look at the whole system.

Spring selection depends on the door and its weight. Correct sizing, controlled tension, and a final balance check matter more than simply fitting a spring that looks similar.

A CLOSER LOOK

The right spring is about balance.

Springs carry much of the door’s weight. The opener moves a balanced door; it is not a substitute for a working counterbalance system. Door size, weight, and hardware configuration affect the spring selection.

Torsion and extension systems store energy in different ways. An inspection should account for the spring system, cables, bearings, and door travel. Do not use a visible spring gap as a reason to touch the assembly or test its tension.

Questions about springs.

Does a running opener rule out a broken spring?

No. The motor can run even when a spring has failed. If the door suddenly will not lift or feels unusually heavy, stop using the opener.

Should both springs be discussed?

On a two-spring system, ask about the age and condition of both springs and the scope of any proposed replacement. The right recommendation depends on the actual door.

Can I order a spring just by measuring its length?

Length alone is not enough to identify the right spring. Wire size, diameter, winding direction, door weight, and the full system configuration matter.
